IN THIS LESSON

Calories aren’t the enemy — they’re energy. In a world that constantly pushes restrictions, it’s easy to forget that your body actually needs fuel to function, feel good, and show up in your daily life. This post breaks down why shifting your focus from cutting calories to understanding your macros — protein, carbs, and fats — can completely change your relationship with food. Instead of under-eating and feeling burnt out, you’ll learn how to fuel your body in a way that supports your goals, keeps your energy up, and actually feels sustainable. Because busy girl wellness isn’t about eating less — it’s about eating smarter.

Reframe Your Thinking: Building Blocks:

Calories don’t need to be looked at as the enemy, but rather the building blocks.

How Calories Help:

  • Boosts focus and productivity

  • Energizes the body

  • Builds a healthy body

  • Provide proper nutrition and health

Barriers You’ve Put in Place to Make Calories the Enemy:

  • “Eating more will make me gain weight”

  • “I don’t want to be bulky”

  • “I’m not hungry”

  • “I want to lose weight”

Understanding Calories:

Calories are not the enemy like you may think. Society has put so much notice into the pilates girl aesthetic, to the clean girls, to whatever looks aesthetic for the feed. The desire is to look toned, not bulky. Many people think that this is only obtainable by setting impossible standards, and diets for themselves but what people forget is that you need to fuel your body.

Girls looking to this type of societal stereotype need to find that balance of eating properly (not cutting out their calories) and moving their bodies. Eating more calories will give your body what it needs to start building muscle and give you that toned look. A lot of people think that weight lifting is going to make them bulky but that’s not the case. By building muscle you are not creating the bulkiness you're looking to avoid, it is building a healthy and fueled body.

Use me for example:

I am 23, 5’8 and I eat intuitively most of the time if I’m not trying to hit a certain gym goal like I am currently. That right, I go out with my girlfriends, I’ll eat that sweet treat, and I don’t restrict myself. This type of eating and fueling has given me a healthy relationship with food. I understand my body and what it needs. Understanding my body with a calculated maintenance of around 2,600 calories a day. I’m not starving myself rather I'm fueling my body properly and through that allowing my body to see the result I am looking for.

This is me eating my maintenance of 2,600 calories a day, and consistently moving my body with weight lifting. Most people would think this is a lot of calories but in reality its what my body needs.

This is me eating 3,000 calories a day with the goal of gaining weight for a bulk and increasing my lift program: I’m looking to gain weight, muscle mass, and move heavier weight. (Keep in mind I want to be bulkier however this isn’t being achieved through weight training unless that's the goal.) Even with an increase in calories the weight is being held properly.

Stop making yourself and your body miserable with extreme restrictions, and diets. Learn to understand your body and what it needs to be properly fueled.

Calories are a source of energy that our body needs in order to properly function. They are needed to sustain life. Oftentimes diets, and restrictions are put in place to allow for weight loss. Though this can be proven effective it is not sustainable, nor is it enjoyable. Calories are about control and discipline. By breaking calories down into macros you receive an instruction manual for what your body needs. Don’t understand macros go check out Understanding Macros.

With macros and understanding calories you can allow yourself to eat properly, eat healthy, and avoid extreme restriction.

That one piece of cake isn’t going to kill you, that one meal out isn’t going to make or break your progress. Macros allow you to have a balanced diet and still enjoy food. Calories allow you to fuel your body.
